CETHLENN FOUND LIR AMONG THE PERSIAN WRECKS ON THE island’s southern coast, with legions of gulls watching him from the masts, spars, and rotting rigging. Lir was busy in the bowels of a narrow boat, tearing out what could not be saved.

“You saw something in the dark chamber?” she called to him from the shore, and the growing pack of wolfhounds ranging along the waterline raised a howling at the sound of her voice. If Lir had been himself, he might have noticed that Cethlenn casually silenced them with a wave of her hand.

“I saw something,” he said, tearing a rotten plank free in a shower of splinters. “Something terrible, and now I must leave.”

Cethlenn climbed into the hull and sat on the remains of a bench. “Have you forgotten the third task?”

“’Tis done,” said Lir. “Though your master does not know it yet.” He paused in his frantic labors and sat beside her. “So you are free to come with me, Cethlenn. If you wish it.”

Cethlenn took his hand. She could not even consider returning to Lagin.
